Project overview
Sugar Hill Creamery is Harlem's first family-owned ice cream shop since 1983. Founded by husband-wife team Nicholas Larsen (Blue Hill Farm), and Petrushka Bazin Larsen, this neighborhood spot serves up artisinal ice cream with both unique and classic flavors, as well as espresso, coffee and pastries.
our solution
Studio Marlowe designed a playful space that became a twist on the classic ice cream parlor. Smooth curves and soft arches blend ceiling and wall, and contrast the sharp diagonals of a herringbone pattern which run along a custom bar and banquette. While the hand laid penny tiles pay a nostalgic homage, the Scandinavian inspired furniture and lighting invoke a modern sensibility. Inspired by a textural scoop of ice cream, Studio Marlowe treated the underside of the arches with a rough popcorn plaster. Studio Marlowe also re-designed the storefront, including a service window which serves coffee in the early morning hours when the rest of the shop is closed, and a full height bi-folding window which opens onto historic Lenox Avenue. The arches frame artwork by Raul Ayala of real Harlem residents
